About The Food and Agriculture Center for Science Education (The Center)
The Center, established in 2022, is a platform of the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture. The Center was created as an educational effort to help young people gain a critical awareness of the connections between food production, science, and their daily lives.
Why? Food is a universal idea, relevant to all people. In fact, it is relevant to all living things because everyone eats. The production of food provides thousands of opportunities for students to explore natural phenomena that connect living things and the earth's systems. Further, the practice of agriculture, since its origins, has been a continuous series of design challenges to meet humans' needs. Food and agriculture present a relatable, and nearly limitless, lens through which students and educators can find opportunities to spark inquiry and solve problems.
The vision of The Center is that each student in every school has an opportunity to engage with food and agriculture through their K–12 science curriculum.
As The Center works to reach its vision, collaboration with other organizations and institutions, particularly those outside of formal education, will be invaluable. These collaborations will increase high-quality science education opportunities for a variety of audiences.
