The City of Bloomington intends to provide a paved bicycle and pedestrian trail connection between Miller-Showers Park and the Cascades Park Trail on Bloomington's north side, and is seeking community input to help determine the most appropriate course of action.

This connection is highly desired, but this particular section is also geographically challenging with a narrow corridor, steep hillsides, Cascades Creek, and streambank erosion issues.

Funding has been identified to complete, at least partially, the Cascades Trail connection.

Options for the Cascades Trail connection include a broad range of possibilities. These options may be considered in combination, since the corridor is used differently in each section and the optimal treatment is likely to vary by section.

  1. Close Old State Road 37 North through Lower Cascades Park to vehicle traffic. Rehabilitate the pavement to create a bicycle and pedestrian trail.
  2. Convert Old State Road 37 North between North College Avenue and Clubhouse Drive to half one-way road for vehicles (which direction will need to be considered), and half paved trail exclusively for bicycles and pedestrians.
  3. Create a sidepath, where the trail is new pavement located alongside the existing Old State Road 37 North.
  4. Create a separated trail that does not always follow the edge of the existing Old State Road 37 North.

This project requires a balance among cost, environmental impact, roadway needs, and the ability to provide a safe and ADA-compliant bicycle and pedestrian trail.
