About the Survey

Maryland State Highway Administration in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Transportation Technology at University of Maryland is undertaking an effort to explore the potential use of video analytics for extraction of traffic data (volume, speed, congestion, incidents, etc.) from the real-time video feeds of its existing CCTV cameras.

This survey is designed to identify and gather feedback on any past, present, or planned video analytics technology pilot and/or deployments in other jurisdictions. Any relevant experience with real-time or post-processed video analytics solutions and services are of interest. Going beyond the standard survey questions, we encourage you to share any important takeaways and lessons learned with regard to technology selection, procurement, field deployments, maintenance, data quality, coverage and cost aspects of the technology in the spaces provided.

Most of the questions are geared towards agencies that are using video analytics, but we are also interested in whether agencies who are not currently using it will be exploring video analytics in the near future. Thus, this questionnaire should be filled out by someone with knowledge of your agency’s camera infrastructure and its current/planned use of video analytics.

The survey contains a series of questions beginning with your agency’s use of CCTV cameras for traffic monitoring and video analytics, and progressing to more detailed questions about camera technology, the type of analytics solution adopted, how the data is used, and experience interacting with various vendors and service providers. We are interested in any insight you can lend into the strengths and weaknesses of video analytics solutions, how they compare to traditional sensor-based methods of measuring traffic characteristics, and the perceived value of these technologies.
