What's your favourite algorithm? (Informatics Jamboree 2015)

Algorithms are everywhere, especially for those of us who work in the field of Informatics. Some claim that there are algorithms that run our lives (http://bit.ly/1vaWFvr)...

Algorithms take an idea aimed at solving a problem and turn it into a full procedure for solving that problem, representing a blueprint for code that is later embedded into a device or software.

Either way, they have a long (pre-)history - the three and a half thousand year old Rhind Papyrus furnishes an early example.

As part of the Jamboree, we want to know what your favourite algorithm is -- and why you think it is important, or why you like it so much.
