Help shape the future of Genomics STP training!

1.Why should I do this survey?

My name is Georgia Murphy and I'm in year 3 of the genomics STP based at Guys Hospital, London. I'm conducting a research project titled “investigating perceived ethical preparedness and desire for ethics training amongst trainee genomics clinical scientists and alumni”. You are receiving this email because you are a genomics STP or alumnus!
As an STP or alumnus, you have likely encountered ethical issues in your role. Issues such as: patients calling the lab distressed asking about turnaround times/results, predictive prenatal testing for VUS’s, reporting incidental findings, handling inappropriate referrals, when it is and is not appropriate to "bend" the test directory criteria, and important equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) considerations. However, exposure and extent of training around these issues varies depending on the workplace in which your training is provided.
My research aims to explore whether our cohort feels that dedicated work-based ethics training activities specific to clinical science could better standardize and prepare all genomics STPs for these issues. How well do you feel the STP is preparing you to face these sorts of issues?
Do you feel confident and supported to face ethical issues when they arise? Do you think you would benefit from some dedicated training activities centred around handling ethical issues? Do you feel ready for the ethical considerations that might come up in your final year assessment? Or perhaps you feel your training is sufficient?
I want to learn what your experience has been like to ensure I make the most representative conclusions about our perspectives for the National School.
I am inviting all past and second/third year genomics STP’s* to complete this survey. There are no incorrect perspectives and your opinion is very valuable. I'm hoping that my project (with your help) will be an important insight for the National School when updating the STP curriculum, and I will be sending my report to the School.
The survey will take around 5 minutes and your data will be anonymised and it will not be possible to identify you from any publications, reports or conference presentations.
Thank you for contributing to my project.
Best wishes,
Georgia
