DIY Use of Antifouling Paints in the UK – Survey for Boat yard managers/owners

Dear Boat Yard Manager / Owner
Thank you for agreeing to participate in our survey on the current practice in the leisure market with regard to applying anti-fouling paints to private boats. Please answer all questions as best of you can. The individual responses to this survey will remain confidential, but we would appreciate if you could indicate whether further follow-up would be welcomed by including your contact details at the bottom of the questionnaire.
1.Do you allow DIY application of AF paints in your yard?
2.Do you allow professional application of AF paints in your yard?
3.In your boat yard how many boats are applied AF paints to per year?
4.Can you estimate the volume of AF paint that is used in your boat yard per year?
5.Can you estimate on how many days per year is AF paint applied?
6.Please can you estimate the volume ratio of AF paint use at your facility between professional applicators and private boat-owners (DIY market)? Professional applicators: private boat owners
7.Do you have any concerns over the current activities of DIY or professional applicators, in terms of their safe use of AF paints, protection of the environment, preparation of the craft and work area, disposal of paint debris, and the disposal of the leftover paint (as hazardous waste)?
8.Do you think there is adequate support in place with regard to publicising the specific hazards of AF paints, and the recommendations with regard to appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and measures to be followed to protect the environment?
9.Do you provide a specific area for DIY antifouling/ professional antifouling application?
10.Does this area have a Bund to collect scrapings and/or old antifouling or are other methods used?

12.What additional support or information could the BCF provide, with regard to the safe application and use of AF paints, and measures to be taken to protect the environment?
13.There is a concern that, in future, the authorities may decide to restrict the use of AF paints to professional users only, i.e. to prohibit the use of AF paints by the general public. Please comment on how this may impact your business, and what issues would be of most concern to you (e.g. increased demand for professional applicator services, increased controls over the training and certification of professional users, changes to business structure if boat owners decide to sell vessels, ensuring safe working practices and correct disposal of waste paint).
