I am conducting a study to understand the lived experiences of instructors who have completed a hiring process for an adjunct faculty position. I invite you to participate in this research. You were selected as a possible participant because you have recent experience operating in an adjunct faculty capacity.

This study is being conducted as part of a dissertation for the Doctor of Business Administration program by Tiray C. Johnson, a graduate student at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Background Information:
The purpose of this research study is to identify how adjunct faculty are contracted for the roles that they fill and the circumstances surrounding their acquisitions, based on their lived personal perspectives.

Procedures:
I will ask you to do the following if you agree to participate in this study: complete a questionnaire thus asking you to recall and provide your perspective on an interaction that you have had in acquiring or attempting to acquire an adjunct faculty position.

Risks:
The study has a minimal risk, a professional backlash could result from association with either this study or identification of the participant due to the current climate for adjunct faculty. Any risk to you will be minimal as you are only disclosing personal information that you wish to disclose, and you may withdraw from the study at any time and have your data destroyed. The information that you provide will be used to document and understand the practices that adjunct faculty experience when attempting/attaining their academic roles.

Confidentiality:
The records of this study will be kept private and confidential. This questionnaire is anonymous. You are not to enter name or the name of the institution on the questionnaire. This is web-based questionnaire and it will not include collection of any personal identifiers such as your IP addresses. Web-based applications do not guarantee absolute anonymity over the Internet. All data collected will be aggregated to further protect all participant individual data. No one will be able to identify you or your answers, and no one will know whether or not you participated in the study. Should the data be published, no individual information will be disclosed. Only my dissertation advisor, Dr. Matthew Nowakowski, and I will have access to the data. Pseudonyms will be used throughout this research to help protect the anonymity of participants and their institutions.

Voluntary Nature of the Study:
Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. Your decision whether to participate or not will not affect you adversely in any manner. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without penalty. I will not use any of the data collected about you should you decide to withdraw from the study. You are free to decline to answer any particular question you do not wish to answer for any reason. You are free to exit the questionnaire at any time for any reason. By continuing with the survey, you are acknowledging that you are are participating on a voluntary basis.
