With increasingly lacklustre responses to the climate emergency from political leaders, and 2024 seeing global temperatures exceed the 1.5 degree Paris target for the first time, have we already lost the fight against climate change? The UK has acknowledged it needs to act faster to meet its commitment to a 68% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030, but what does that mean for sustainable development and the huge task of retrofitting a generation of old and dated commercial stock. Some 75% of future emissions reductions will have to come from buildings and land use – should we even bother to reach for a seemingly impossible target?
