Information for Mentor registrants

This mentoring Program, targeted at women who are in the stage of their career in local government where they are contemplating a career as an executive, connects female accomplished personnel with senior local government professionals who are currently or recently working in local government, to offer their targeted advice and support.

The Program aims to develop positive mentoring partnerships, whilst also providing the opportunity to:
  • Improve career planning for female local government professionals
  • Develop life skills to enhance career and workplace transitions
    Reduce gender specific career attitudes within female professionals
  • Develop the mentoring culture within local government and build the capacity to undertake formal mentoring roles
The program aims to inspire women to continually strive for higher levels of performance and provide guidance on career pathways to enable them to achieve their career goals and aspirations. The program is designed in line with sound mentoring program principles and adheres to contemporary practices.

What is mentoring?
Mentoring is a protected two-way partnership, which fosters the growth of skills, knowledge and practical advice to advance career development through positive encouragement.
 
Mentoring is a highly valuable developmental tool, based on the ability to teach and learn from each other. Effective mentoring works best with establishing consistency, mutual respect and development of a safe space to share ideas, knowledge and information.
 
Mentoring is:
  • a relationship that can last for a period of time or as an ongoing relationship
  • flexible and at times even informal, in that meetings between the mentor and mentee can occur as required, such as when the mentee needs advice, guidance or support
  • centred around developing the mentee professionally, for the purpose of growing their career
Cost / Fee:
There is no cost to participate in the program or fee paid to mentors

Time commitment:
  • 6-10 hours between August 2022 and February 2023 as agreed with your mentee
  • 6 two hour digital facilitated evening workshops (optional)
  • At least one hour per month for 6 months virtual meeting between mentor and mentee, arranged according to individual schedules and preferences

  • Selection process:
    • Invitation to participate will be shared widely to local government professionals seeking to advance their career
    • Complete online application here by 8 August 2022
    • Our selection panel will shortlist against the criteria
    • Successful and unsuccessful candidates will be informed by email by 15 August
    • *Please note that the panels decision about who will participate is final
           
    Mentor registration criteria: 
  • More than 5 years experience in local government or significant executive experience and knowledge of local government
  • Able to commit time and energy into the process
  • Willingness to support and guide others in their career
