FEEDBACK FOR ACEC NEW YORK WINTER CONFERENCE PROGRAMMING

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, or DEI, has never been quick or easy to achieve, particularly in the AEC industry.  We recognize the good work we’ve started but we also need to recognize that DEI work is not about being a good person or a good company or getting a gold star. It’s about being in a forever state of doing work that elevates us all.  Words matter. Actions matter. Listening matters. Curiosity matters. Compassion matters. So, move humbly to do the work. True change is about more than superficial diversity, equity and inclusion programs and messages. It’s about justice.

So, where can we start as individuals and as organizations? Diversity and Inclusion is a top-to-bottom business strategy, not just a Human Resource program. What does this mean for the AEC industry?

At the 2021 ACEC Winter Conference we will have an opportunity to thoughtfully and meaningfully address workplace DE&I.  We are seeking your input so that we can build a session that is most relevant to you as an attendee.  We are grateful for your feedback and willingness to be part of the solution.

This introduction was largely adopted from an essay by Kim Nugent, founder of Kim A. Nugent Consulting LLC & Collaboration Partner for DEI firm, Impact Consulting. Her words offer insight that frames the conversations we need to have in order to make lasting change.
