Survey Background and Instructions:

This survey focuses exclusively on lab content for the Introduction to General Chemistry, General Chemistry I, and General Chemistry II templates. No substantive changes have been made to the lecture content or other template elements vetted in the pre-development, post-development, and final survey process.

In preparation for a potential intersegmental review, concerns were raised regarding the level of specificity in the Chemistry Common Course Numbering (CCN) templates related to lab content. In response, the Chemistry CCN Faculty Workgroup (CCNFW) convened in November 2025 to identify lab content topics for the Introduction to General Chemistry, General Chemistry I, and General Chemistry II templates that can be addressed through experiments without restrictive resource requirements, while supporting transferability and articulation.

You are being asked to review the proposed enhanced lab content and to provide feedback as needed.

For the purposes of this survey, the combined lecture/lab template for each course is provided solely to give context for the laboratory content. It is important to note that the lab content included in the combined lecture/lab templates is identical to the lab content proposed for the corresponding standalone lab for all Chemistry templates. As such, feedback provided on the lab content in the combined lecture/lab template will be applied equally to the standalone lab templates. Faculty who teach only standalone laboratory courses are just as critical to this review process as those who teach combined lecture/lab courses.

While reviewing the lab content, please focus your feedback at the CCN template level. The goal is to ensure that the laboratory content is appropriate, clear, and broadly applicable across all California Community Colleges, rather than tailored to the practices, equipment, or constraints of any single institution.

Note: Chemistry CCN Templates were developed in multiple instructional formats (combined lecture/lab, lecture only, lab only) to reflect the varied ways a college may offer these courses. Colleges are only expected to align their Course Outlines of Record to CCN templates if they offer a course in the same instructional format.

Survey Structure

The survey will be divided into two parts.

Part 1 will ask for demographic information, including your name, contact information, institutional affiliation, and system affiliation (CCC, CSU, UC, Independent College or University).

Part 2 will ask you to review the lab content included in the combined lecture/lab templates for Introduction to General Chemistry, General Chemistry I, and General Chemistry II. As you provide feedback, please consider whether the lab content:
  • Appropriately reflects lab topics that should be included in each course, and
  • Adequately supports requirements for UC transferability, Cal-GETC area approval, and/or major preparation
Thank you for taking the time to review these Chemistry templates related to lab content. If you require accessibility assistance with the CCN Course Templates, please request support by emailing ccnsupport@asccc.org. We are committed to ensuring an inclusive experience for all users.

Survey feedback is due by April 28, 2026.
