In 2020 the UMC denominational leaders, unable to settle the differences between the Traditional/Orthodox beliefs and the Progressive/Liberal beliefs that wish to change traditional practices in some areas, presented a professionally mediated and negotiated “Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace through Separation” that would enable churches to stay or separate from the UMC. Unfortunately, the vote for this Protocol has been postponed until 2024.Local churches may choose whether to follow the Traditional/Orthodox beliefs or to follow the Progressive/Liberal beliefs. On May 1, 2022 the new Global Methodist Church was launched upholding traditional, orthodox beliefs and practices. The Progressive/Liberal portion of the current UMC will stay as the UMC Denomination. A congregational vote as well as payment of whatever terms are presented by the Annual Conference (unpaid apportionments, pension liability and possibly a percentage of the assets of the congregation) would be required for a church to leave the current UMC to join the Global Methodist Church.The current foundational beliefs and practice of the UMC are: - All Scripture is God inspired - Jesus Christ is fully human and fully divine - The nature of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Trinity) - The physical or bodily resurrection of Jesus - Salvation is given by grace through faith in Jesus - The Biblical understanding of marriage is between a man and a womanWhich of the following best describes your view of these current beliefs?
