What is PAFN?
UVA's Peer Advising Family Network (PAFN) is a peer mentoring organization affiliated with the Office of the Dean of Students at the University of Virginia. Our goal is to help smooth the transition to college for incoming Asian and Asian-American students. We do this by setting up a family system where two upperclassmen serve as mentors for a small group of incoming students. They provide advice about university life ranging from academics to relationships, almost acting as parents. The incoming students, or children form lifelong bonds with their parents and their fellow siblings. Furthermore, each family is placed into a larger family (P, A, F or N family) where two board members serve as family heads or grandparents. Therefore, PAFN is an organization where incoming and returning students create a dynamic family system that provides a chain of support for all those involved.

Why should I join?
Through PAFN, participating students are able to start their time at UVA with a support system. If you decide to join, you will receive two advisors who will have similar majors, interests and hobbies with you. These two advisors will be upperclassmen who will be able to advise you with a variety of tips, include where the best places to eat are, where to live next year, what classes to take, etc. They will also act as a friend, somebody to turn to if you ever need to talk or just hand out. Furthermore, you will have several other siblings, all among students like yourself. They will also be new to the UVA community, allowing you to start off your UVA experience with a family.

You will receive an email from your PAFN advisors in mid to late summer who will explain what to expect for the incoming year. During the first several weeks of school, PAFN will hold several events for you to get to know your advisor and siblings better, while getting acclimated to the University. By starting in the summer, we hope you will be coming into UVA already knowing a few people. As you join other organizations and branch our from PAFN, we hope that you will be comforted knowing that PAFN will always serve as a support system for you.
