Community Development and Social Justice (CDSJ) Program Overview

The Community Development and Social Justice Program (CDSJ) provides AAP Students with a service learning opportunity that integrates research and practice in preparation for graduate study in Urban Planning, Social Welfare, Public Policy, and Public Health.

CDSJ scholars participate in activities and receive mentorship to develop their understanding of social justice within the CDSJ fields and become competitive applicants for graduate/professional school. In addition, participants receive a stipend for participation. Details can also be found on the AAP CDSJ Website.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

• Provide scholars with opportunities to engage in internship and applied research within their field of interest.

• Train students to apply for internships and research opportunities.

• Prepare students to apply for graduate school and financial aid opportunities.

• Develop a community of mutual support and collaboration within the CDSJ cohort.

• Empower scholars to pursue graduate/professional school within the CDSJ fields and become agents of change for their communities.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

CDSJ applicants must:

• Be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time at UCLA and a member of AAP.

• Be a junior or senior level standing.

• Have the motivation to engage in independent research and gain internship experiences.

• Express an interest in graduate or professional school in Urban Planning, Social Welfare, Public Policy, and Public Health.

• Demonstrate academic potential for graduate study.

Students apply in the Fall Quarter, and the program requires a two-quarter commitment during the Winter and Spring quarters of the application year.

WINTER QUARTER

• Enroll in the weekly CDSJ Scholars Program 2-unit Honors Collegium Seminar (HC 193A).

• Attend weekly one-on-one meetings with the CDSJ Coordinator.

• Learn the nuts & bolts of graduate or professional school application.

• Develop a research proposal and identify an internship site for Spring Quarter.


SPRING QUARTER

• Enroll in a 2-unit Civic Engagement 95CE course and complete 40-hours of internship at a community site.

• Attend weekly one-on-one and cohort meetings with CDSJ Coordinator.

• Develop a small-scale applied research project based on internship experience.

• Present research project at the annual UCLA Undergraduate Research Week.

• Receive a stipend upon successful completion of the program.
