Decision makers, whether within the government, development partners, international agencies or civil society organizations, need a range of information to make sound decisions on addressing food insecurity and malnutrition.

Information on food security and nutrition can be organized into three broad categories:

1) SITUATION: information functions and associated systems that allow for the understanding and identification of causes and prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition;

2) ACTIONS: tracking and mapping of food security and nutrition actions, including policies, programmes, projects, and any intervention that has explicit food security and nutrition objectives. This may be in the form of tracking financial investments into such actions, or also by identifying who is doing what kind of interventions, where, etc.;

3) RESULTS: assessing the impact of policies, programmes and/or projects on food security and nutrition through systems that systematically monitor and evaluate progress and impact of food security and nutrition and that allow for lessons-learning and feedback into the policy process.

While food security and nutrition information systems that focus on the situation are prevalent and highly visible within the food security and nutrition stakeholder community, it is only recently that discussions have centered on the need to track and map food security and nutrition actions.

The Committee on World Food Security has taken up this issue and recommended to take into account the harmonization of systems for tracking and mapping of actions and the linkages between such systems with other food security and nutrition information systems.

A workshop on harmonization of food security action mapping systems and methods has been scheduled for September 2012 with a view to create a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges related to integration/linkages with other FSN information sources.

The following survey is aimed at exploring users needs by looking at the current situation, the (ideal) package of information envisaged and the challenges to streamlining of FSN information.

Results will inform the write-up of a paper to be presented and discussed at the workshop in September, which will lead to recommendations to the CFS Session in October.
