Ceola Drive Pedestrian Safety Installations
Council is inviting community feedback on whether to retain or remove the pedestrian safety installations on Ceola Drive, Mareeba. The installations, constructed in 2024, comprise of a pedestrian safety kerb, mini bollards, line marking and signage that together create a dedicated walk / cycling lane.
The “Lighter, Affordable, Effective” project aimed to improve the walking and cycling experience by trialling more affordable and timely solutions than traditional, more costly upgrades. The intent was that these treatments could be implemented, modified, replaced or removed quickly, easily and at low cost, if required.
Installations at five sites throughout Mareeba were developed through local community consultation to provide a continuous and safe walking and cycling route connecting significant destinations between eastern and western sides of Mareeba. The changes at most sites have been well received by the community with the majority reporting positive improvements to pedestrian safety, accessibility and overall walking experience.
Community response to the Ceola Drive installations has shown that 46% of residents rated the impact on safety as “improved” and the remainder provided a “neutral” or “negative” rating. However, traffic monitoring on Ceola Drive has shown a decrease in the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit from 35% to 24% shortly after the installations were put in place. Research has shown there is a direct correlation between impact speed and survival rate of pedestrians involved in traffic crashes.
Noting the community response to date, Council is conducting this final survey to help guide the decision about whether the Ceola Drive pedestrian safety installations should be retained or removed. The survey is open to all Mareeba Shire residents and will close on Sunday 19 October 2025.
The Mareeba LAE Project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.
