Food as Medicine (FAM) is a specialized Cooking Matters series tailored for participants needing nutrition education and support with cooking healthy meals at home. FAM classes meet weekly on Zoom and feature nutrition education and the demonstration of nutritious and culturally diverse recipes. Participants in FAM receive a biweekly delivery of ingredients right to their door to cook along during class.

Currently, this program is offered in Contra Costa County for Contra Costa Health Plan Medi-cal members in partnership with the Contra Costa Regional Medical Centers. For eligible patients, we can bill for these services as medically tailored meals and medically supportive food via CalAIM.

As CalAIM continues to roll out and these community supports become covered, 18 Reasons plans on expanding the program to reach Alameda and San Francisco counties and their respective Managed Care Health Plans. We can also offer nutrition and culinary education in partnership with other organizations that are distributing groceries or medically tailored meals under CalAIM.

And while we're excited about the potential that CalAIM holds, we also recognize that it will not be available for every person who could benefit. As such, we can partner with healthcare providers to bring nutrition and cooking education to their patients outside of CalAIM.  Please fill out the form below and an 18 Reasons staff member will reach out to continue the conversation. Thank you!
