1. Welcome to The Behemoth Veteran Survey

We are U.S. military Veterans like you conducting research to find out what veterans are really thinking and feeling about their past and/or current experiences with the Department of Veterans Affairs.   We are not affiliated with the VA in any capacity. We are NOT affiliated with any political group, VSO, non-profit, company,  or outside stakeholder. We are private citizen veterans who want to help veterans including ourselves by improving the VA systems we use. There seems to be a lot of opinions out there but we are not quite sure these opinions are coming from veterans.  Whatever the case may be we want to hear the full broad spectrum of opinions.  If you are a veteran, we would love to hear from you about what you are personally experiencing, so we can get a better gauge about what is really going on at the VA from a veteran's point of view.  Your answers will help us build more targeted surveys so we can zero in on each of the issues. The goal and hope is to help improve the VA system for everyone. We are primarily evaluating federal VA programs.  Typically Veteran's homes are operated by the individual states. If evaluating a particular state run VA program is important to you, please let us know and we can work with you to develop a tailored survey for that particular state and/or program. Questions in this survey are targeted to evaluate federal VA programs unless specified. Please note there are three main federal branches of the VA :
1) Veterans Health Administration (VHA); 2) Veterans Benefit Administration (VBA); 3) National Cemetery

Why are veterans fearful of criticizing the VA?
In this survey we are also trying to figure out if the talk among veterans is true that some veterans are afraid to complain or criticize the VA in any capacity for fear of retaliation. Some veterans have reported a range of fear across many departments including being treated differently from healthcare providers to fear of loss of benefits. We ask demographic questions in order to learn if a specific group or groups of veterans are being targeted. The only way the VA can improve is if veterans feel safe and confident enough to be candid. If you are publicly rating surveys higher than you personally experience then there is a disconnect and veterans will continue to get substandard treatment and services; everyone suffers.

Survey Mechanics
The survey may take about 70 minutes for some people, so please make some time before you start. The time to take the survey is highly dependent on your involvement with the VA. Although you will only be able to take the survey one time, you can save your answers for a particular section and return to the survey later.   Most questions are multiple choice. There will be comment fields available in each section, so you may want to take this survey from a device larger than your smart phone, unless you are good at typing with your thumbs. Your responses are completely anonymous. You can only take the survey once, but you can edit your responses until the survey is closed in December.  Questions marked with an asterisk (*) are required. The first part of the survey deals with demographics. This part of the survey is necessary because it helps us identify patterns or trends.  Your responses are completely anonymous. For those who want to offer input but want to remain anonymous there will be opportunities to write comments.
