Participant Information Sheet

You are invited to take part in this research project which aims to explore levels of empowerment and distress in cancer patients going to a Solaris Cancer Care Centre.

We want to find out more about patients’ empowerment/distress when diagnosed with cancer.  To help us achieve this, we will ask you to complete a brief survey.  The survey will first ask about the level of distress you may have experienced in the past week and its impact on practical, familial, physical, emotional problems, and spiritual/religious concerns. Then it will list strategies used to assist and ask how those applied to you. Last, some demographics such as age, place of birth, level of education, etc. Some of these questions may be seen as personal and private.  You can choose not to answer any of the questions on topics sensitive to you.  However we would be grateful if you could complete the entire survey.

There are no clear benefits to you apart from the satisfaction of contributing to health research towards improving the care of future patients with cancer. There are no anticipated risks.

At the conclusion of the study, a summary of the findings will be presented via social media. However, more in-depth reports of study outcomes and findings will be available on request.

This study has been approved by the Murdoch University Human Research Ethics Committee (Approval 2018/218).  If you have any reservation or complaint about the ethical conduct of this research, and wish to talk with an independent person, you may contact Murdoch University’s Research Ethics & Integrity on Tel. 08 9360 6677 or e-mail ethics@murdoch.edu.au.
