This application is for University of Southern Maine (USM) graduate students who wish to apply to be an Applied Research Fellow for the 2019-2020 academic year. To learn more about the program visit the Data Innovation Project website.

The Data Innovation Project will be offering a minimum of TWO fully subsidized fellowships for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Application Process and Guidelines
In the online application, you will be prompted to upload a letter of intent, resume/CV, two references, and short writing sample (no more than 5 pages).

In your letter of intent, please expand upon your qualifications and address:
  • What you hope to get out of the applied research fellowship
  • Briefly describe your research experience, and if applicable, any program evaluation experience.
  • Briefly describe any community-based or non-profit work experiences you have had.


Any USM graduate student may apply for this position, regardless of degree program.

Graduate students must:
  • Be fully matriculated in a degree program at the graduate level (Certificates of Graduate Study are not eligible);
  • Be registered for at least 6 credits of coursework in the semester(s) in which they will be working (master’s and CAS students), or registered for GRS 603 (masters) or GRS 701 (doctoral) and have a certificate of satisfactory progress from their program;
  • Have completed at least 2 graduate-level courses in their program of study;
  • Have a 3.0 GPA and be making acceptable academic progress in their graduate program.

Selection Process
Applicants are selected by DIP staff based on their research skills and experience, experience working with community organizations, and the quality of their application. Research assistants will be matched with community organizations based on skills and experience and the organization's needs. Please be descriptive and clear in your goals, intentions, and relevant experiences to aid in the matching process.
