Why STEM?

Our free STEM Camp focuses on middle school students, a crucial time when young minds are exploring their interests and possibilities for the future. At this age, engaging with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) can spark a lasting interest that leads to high school readiness and beyond.

Why middle school? It's simple. This is when students start making choices that will affect their academic paths. By introducing them to the exciting world of STEM, we aim to show them the real, tangible opportunities for careers that not only interest them but can also provide a stable, sustainable income. Careers in STEM are the fastest-growing fields, and they offer a chance to break the cycle of poverty with jobs that are in demand and well-paid.

BSOC STEM Camp is more than just an educational program; it's a stepping stone towards a brighter future. By making this camp free, we ensure that every child, regardless of their family's financial situation, has access to this opportunity. We're not just talking about changing lives; we're actively working to do it, one middle school student at a time.
STEM Camp Focuses

Galactic Quest Space Camp (June 24 - July 5th):
Galactic Quest Space Camp is a thrilling opportunity for scholars to explore STEM through an intergalactic adventure. The challenge activities allow youth to develop critical thinking skills while they have fun making discoveries and designing solutions that are out of this world! Space week will take youth on a journey from a first look at the stars to fostering crops on a distant world, while participants create a STEM identity. Can your scholar build a rover and hydraulic arm to survive on a distant planet?!

Food Detectives Camp (July 8th - July 19th): At Food Detectives Camp, scholars will dive into the exciting intersection of chemistry and nutrition. Using their favorite candies and everyday kitchen supplies, campers will learn basic chemistry concepts in a way that's both fun and educational. This camp empowers scholars to become savvy consumers, with activities focused on understanding marketing, reading food labels, and making healthy choices. It’s a unique opportunity for scholars to blend scientific exploration with practical life skills, setting the foundation for informed eating habits through interactive and engaging experiments.

Lead-Free Futures Camp (July 22nd - Aug 2nd): Lead free futures Camp introduces scholars to the vital role they play in protecting their community. The activities are rooted in real-world issues, such as the impact of lead exposure and the importance of environmental justice. Through hands-on experiments, campers will engage in environmental sample collection and analysis, learning how to detect lead in various mediums and understand its effects. This camp is designed to foster an appreciation for the environment and empower scholars with the knowledge and tools to contribute to a healthier planet. It's a great way for young environmentalists to get involved in science while making a difference in their community.
