What does good work look like
for truck drivers in Aotearoa?

We want to know what truck drivers’ wages and conditions are like right now and what you think they really should be like, to make it a really good job. This survey is being conducted across the transport industry and could lead to the establishment of new, higher standards of work. Truck drivers deserve to be recognised and rewarded for their essential work, and better conditions will help us attract and retain drivers in Aotearoa too.

The survey is being conducted by FIRST Union, with support from the Transport and Logistics System Group, which is made up of union, industry and government representatives. The findings of the survey will be shared with this group and publicly.

Completing this survey is voluntary and anonymous. You are not required to provide your name and no information will be reported that could identify you or anyone else.

In recognition of your time, you will be invited at the end of the survey to go into the draw to win one of three $80 Prezzy cards. Your details will only be used for the draw and will not be connected to your survey answers.

If you have any questions or problems, please reach out to edward.miller@firstunion.org.nz.

About the Transport and Logistics System Group

The tripartite group was established after the release of the 2021 report Managing vehicle-related risks from supply chain pressures, authored by Mackie Research and commissioned by WorkSafe. The report found that:

·      When harm or an incident occurs, individual error is usually cited as the cause, when in fact it is more often the consequence of failures throughout the whole system.
·      Poor wages and conditions can be contributing factors in workplace accidents.
·      Improvements to the working lives of truck drivers are best informed by those doing the job, and that collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders is key.
·      The industry needs to work together to define what good work standards look like, what the barriers are, and how to achieve them for the long-term reduction in harm to those working in and around vehicles.
