Background
The AAP Council on Community Pediatrics invites nominations for the 2024 AAP Calvin C. J. Sia Community Pediatrics Medical Home Leadership and Advocacy Award. Named in honor of Calvin C. J. Sia, MD, FAAP, this award honors pediatricians who have advanced the medical home through practice and advocacy, especially for children with special health care needs. One member of the American Academy of Pediatrics is awarded the Calvin C. J. Sia award each year.

Award recipient will be acknowledged in the AAP News and will receive an honorarium and award.

Award Criteria

The award is presented to a community pediatrician who does several of the following:
  • Demonstrates clinical excellence in community pediatrics and a commitment to continuous improvement in the delivery of care in a medical home
  • Supports practice and advocacy efforts that promote a medical home for all children in the community
  • Innovates standards of practice to improve models of pediatric care delivery
  • Provides culturally competent care
  • Partners with families in the provision of medical homes
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the role and duty of the pediatrician in the community as a professional, leader, and advocate to improve child health outcomes
  • Implements AAP policy related to community pediatrics and the provision of medical homes (e.g., Medical Home, Community Pediatrics)
Prior award recipients have been recognized for a variety of accomplishments including:
  • Improving access to the medical home for low-income and underserved children
  • Implementing programs and strategies to increase family engagement and satisfaction
  • Building successful community partnerships to improve outcomes for families of diverse cultural, linguistic, and immigrant backgrounds

Award Eligibility
  • Nominee must be a pediatrician, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a resident of the United States or Canada.
  • Nominees are not required to be members of the Council on Community Pediatrics; however, preference is given to Council members.
  • Members of the Council on Community Pediatrics Executive Committee and the AAP Board of Directors are not eligible to receive this award during their term of service.
  • Deceased persons are not eligible for awards.
  • An individual may only receive one Council on Community Pediatrics award per year.
