The Jockey Club honors John K. “Jack” Goodman’s numerous contributions to the Thoroughbred industry thorough The Jockey Club John “Jack” Goodman Scholarship at the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program in Tucson. 

The Jockey Club John “Jack” Goodman Scholarship, in the amount of $6,000, will be awarded annually to a University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program student based on their proposed career path in the Thoroughbred racing industry, previous industry involvement and academic achievement. Full-time undergraduate or graduate students are eligible. 

Students must submit an application with three letters of recommendation, a 500-word essay on their career plans in the Thoroughbred horse racing industry and applicable school transcripts. Scholarships are for one academic school year and recipients must reapply every year. For spring semester renewal, students must maintain a 3.00 cumulative grade point and full-time status (either undergraduate or graduate) at the University of Arizona. 

Goodman is one of the three founders of the Race Track Industry Program and was a long time Member of The Jockey Club. As an Arizona Racing Commissioner from 1965-1985, Goodman served as President of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners in 1979. Goodman was also active as a horseman, winning the Grand National at Aintree in 1964 with Team Spirit and, campaigning graded stakes winner and track record holder Gundaghia.
