Knowledge is Power: Arkansas Government 101: How A Bill Becomes A Law
The law-making process is initiated by your state Senators and House members filing a bill. After its filing the bill is then assigned by the Senate President Pro Temp or House Speaker to one of the ten standing Senate or House committees according to topics such as education, health, or revenue and tax. The most common way a bill becomes law after filing is for it to then pass through the following five hurdles: a committee in the Arkansas Senate, the Arkansas full 35 member Senate, the comparable Arkansas House committee, the full 100 member Arkansas House, and then to the Governor for signing into law. Take the quiz below to test your knowledge and learn how many votes it takes to pass a bill along each step to becoming a law.
