The Virginia Beach Bar Foundation (VBBF), the nonprofit charitable affiliate of the Virginia Beach Bar Association, is developing a list of the groups we intend to support in the immediate future. The VBBF Board of Trustees has chosen the following groups for consideration. We would like your views on these groups. Therefore please rate the following options.

Question Title

* 1. Virginia Beach Drug Treatment Court: This program is administered by the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney’s Office, Probation and Parole, Department of Human Services, and the Virginia Beach Circuit Court. The goal of the Virginia Beach Drug Treatment Court is to rehabilitate nonviolent drug offenders and addicts and provide them with an alternative to prison in order to change their long-term behavior. Contributions provide assistance with graduation costs and expenses associated with providing recognition of graduates from the program, which are not funded by the state or city.

* 2. Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia: Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia is a nonprofit that provides representation in civil matters to low income residents of Hampton Roads. It has an office in Virginia Beach. It provides free legal services in civil matters to qualifying low income people in furtherance of its mission to promote the equal application of justice and to remove impediments to fairness for low income and vulnerable families of eastern Virginia.

Virginia Beach CASA: Court Appointed Special Advocates ("CASA") for children is a community-based program that recruits, trains and supports citizen-volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courtroom. The Virginia Beach CASA program has existed since 1989

First Colonial Legal Studies Academy: The Legal Studies Academy at First Colonial High School provides students who have an interest in the law, law related fields, and legal and ethical issues the opportunity to extend their knowledge beyond the typical high school program. The Academy offers students the opportunity to explore careers in the area of legal studies in its four-year program.

* 5. Connect With A Wish: Connect With A Wish, Inc. is a nonprofit organization operating in Virginia Beach that assists children in Virginia Beach foster care with resources and support needed to grow into positive and productive members of the community. Its efforts include court-related activities and helping with the legal needs of children in foster care.

* 6. Virginia Beach High School Mock Trial Program: The Virginia Beach High School Mock Trial Championship Program is currently operational at Kellam High School, First Colonial High School, and Cape Henry Collegiate.  It is designed to promote an understanding and appreciation of the American judicial system through academic competitions and other endeavors for high school students. One of our members, Matt Rossettini, is the local person in charge of this program.

* 7. Paralegal Certification Program Scholarships: Needy students wishing to enroll in paralegal training programs often need financial assistance. Through scholarships funded by the VBBF, we would help to expand these opportunities to more residents of Virginia Beach.

* 8. Law School/College Scholarships: Law foundations have historically provided scholarships to qualified applicants needing financial assistance when entering law schools or pre-law college programs.

* 9. Wills for Heroes Foundation: Wills for Heroes is a program that provides free estate planning documents for first responders. It was implemented shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. One of our members, Tyler Rosá, is in charge of this program locally.

* 10. You may also suggest other groups to which you would like to see the Virginia Beach Bar Foundation provide financial support. All charitable organizations should be law-related.
