Building Healthy Communities is a healthy school program, which was implemented in your child's school this year. Their school was assigned a Healthy School Coordinator to assist in program delivery, and received program materials, training, equipment, and access to vast expertise to assist with a healthy school transformation. There were 6 components to the program, embedded throughout the school environment: 1. Principal engagement included daily morning Healthy Tip of the Day announcements, displaying the Building Healthy Communities banner, and supporting teachers, staff and students; 2. Classroom teachers provided education on healthy eating with 8 different lessons throughout the school year, and conducted short physical activity breaks during the school day; 3. The school received new Physical Education equipment, and PE teachers received Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum training and implementation support; 4. The school received a mobile recess cart, game packs and mentoring in order to increase time being active at recess; 5. The school created a team of students to help in the healthy school transformation by implementing fun activities which focused on healthy eating and physical activity, guided by the Fuel Up To Play 60 program; and 6: An after school program was held once per week for an hour, which included a healthy snack, reinforcement of the Healthy Tip of the Day, a walking and mileage portion and physical activity portion.
