2026 Matt Mumber M.D. Award for Advancing Cancer Patient Navigation

About

The Matt Mumber M.D. Award for Advancing Cancer Patient Navigation and its associated grant of $5,000 is awarded to a program that values and demonstrates innovative collaborations, patient-centered care, leadership, and advocacy within the cancer care community by connecting, educating, and sharing best practices among patient navigators in Georgia. The award winner may only designate the funds to be used in further support of navigation care within the cancer community.

In honor of Matt Mumber’s vision, the award is presented to the navigator and/or community health worker who embraces the CPNG values and guiding principles of inclusiveness, collaboration, compassion, and a holistic approach to achieving optimal patient outcomes.

Priority will be given to nominees who have created unique or innovative collaborations within the cancer care community to connect, educate and share best practices among patient navigators in Georgia so that together we can successfully reduce barriers and increase access to services specifically related to cancer.
In addition to the qualities described above, the winner of this award will be a person or program that:
  • Has not received the award in the last 5 years.
  • Meets the standards in one or more of the following categories in addition to their professional role: Innovation, Patient-Centered Care, Leadership and/or Advocacy.
  • Innovation:
    • Connects, educates, and shares best practices among Georgia’s patient navigators
    • Demonstrates vision and innovation in the profession of patient navigation/community health work
  • Patient-Centered Care:
    • Listens and supports patients’ goals for care, including integrative medicine
    • Considers patients’ needs, including their families, caregivers, and support systems
    • Successful in reducing barriers and increasing access to cancer care
  • Leadership:
    • Displays creative problem-solving and ethical decision-making skills
    • Adheres to professional navigation standards of care
    • Pursues professional development opportunities and encourages others to do the same
  • Advocacy:
    • Advocates for local and/or state-level policy changes to improve health care access, quality, and affordability
    • Places patients' rights and self-determination first

Who is not eligible:
Current Georgia CORE board members and officers
Georgia CORE employees and family members

Award:
The awardee will receive $5,000. Funds may only be designated to a non-profit organization or healthcare system based in Georgia.

Public Recognition:
The honoree will be highlighted at the "2026 CPNG Annual Meeting" in Alpharetta, Georgia, on August 21, 2026.
