CPSS Bylaw & Policy Consultation - 2018 |
Introduction
The Council of the College has been considering regulation in the area of office-based cosmetic/aesthetic medicine for several years. The focus has been on procedures performed in office, as opposed to those performed in a non-hospital treatment facility as those would be subject to the requirements of Bylaw 26.1.
A draft regulatory bylaw relating to office-based cosmetic/aesthetic procedures was approved in principle in November 2017 and was circulated for stakeholder consultation. At its January 2018 meeting, Council appointed a committee to review the stakeholder feedback and to re-draft the document as a policy. The committee did so, broadening it to apply to all non-insured office-based procedures rather than only cosmetic procedures. To address the issue of laser procedures currently performed by laser technicians, the committee proposed regulatory bylaw 23.4.
The committee also proposed a similar policy that would apply to all physicians performing office-based insured procedures, to ensure similar expectations apply to all physicians performing procedures in-office.
At its June 2018 meeting, Council approved these three documents in principle, and directed that additional stakeholder consultation take place. Given the expanded scope of these documents, the Council felt it appropriate to consult via the CPSS website to encourage feedback from as many stakeholders as possible.
