The Ballarat Women’s Welding Short Course will run over 12 weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00am–4:00pm, commencing Tuesday 5 May 2026.
This course is free and designed specifically for women, girls and non-binary people of all ages who are interested in pursuing a career in the engineering trades, particularly through an apprenticeship.
Training will be delivered at Ballarat Group Training, Barkly Square.
What you’ll gain
Throughout the course, participants will:
- Develop practical welding skills in a hands-on, supportive environment
- Work towards a Certificate II in Engineering, completing four units of competency
- Build confidence and understanding of what a career in engineering looks like
- Connect with industry and employers
Pathways after completion
On completion of the course, participants will be supported into one of the following pathways:
- Pathway 1: Apprenticeship: Transition directly into an engineering apprenticeship, with ongoing support from Ballarat Group Training and the AMWU to secure employment.
- Pathway 2: Further Training: Continue working towards the full Certificate II in Engineering through the Free TAFE program.
Apprenticeship opportunities
This course is designed to support entry into key engineering trades, including:
- Engineering Fabrication (Boilermaker): Focused on welding, fabrication, and metal preparation (cutting, grinding, shaping)
- Engineering Mechanical (Fitter and Turner): Focused on machinery maintenance, fault finding, and manufacturing components

- Are interested in starting an apprenticeship in engineering or manufacturing
- Can commit to attending all scheduled sessions
- Are motivated to pursue employment in the industry
