Request for Application

The national Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is offering a few licensed residential programs in the United States, committed to hiring at least one family/parent partner (see definition below), with the opportunity to participate in a FREE BBI technical assistance (TA) project.

Overview of the BBI Family Partner Program Enhancement Project (Family Partner Project)

The goals of the project are to:
  • Provide several residential programs, chosen through a simple application process, with a range of free technical assistance (TA) activities that will successfully prepare their organizations for, and help them with hiring, developing support systems for, and integrating family/parent partner(s) fully into their organizations.
  • At the end of the project, leaders/staff from each participating program will have enthusiasm for BBI, deep appreciation for the TA provided, and believe they have the tools to be successful with family/parent partners.
Definition of a Family Partner:
  • Family Partners may also be referred to as parent partners or advocates, parent peer support specialists, peer advocates, family navigators, or other terms, such as credible messengers.
  • The most important requirement is that a Family Partner is someone who has navigated the system as a parent of a child with emotional or behavioral challenges. Because of their lived experience, Family Partners have a unique ability to engage as peers of families receiving services, supporting them with empathy and understanding. Family Partners may also participate in program and system development through membership in planning and policy-making bodies at various levels. Some also have specific expertise in residential interventions, substance abuse, or the child welfare and/or juvenile justice systems.
  • Family Partners provide intentional peer support to parents through strategic self-disclosure related to their own family experiences. They provide non-adversarial advocacy. They suspend bias and blame in all interactions with parents and professionals. They encourage parents to practice self-care while building on their own unique strengths. Family Partners convey hope, build connections, provide resources and linkages, offer opportunities for culturally responsive education and skill-building, and encourage parents to utilize their voice to be part of problem-solving.

Requirements for licensed residential programs to be considered for the project are:
  1. For leadership staff to have attended a BBI training program/webinar (virtual or live) in the past AND/OR to have worked with BBI in a previous TA project,
  2. To have had at least three leadership staff enthusiastically embrace the principle of family-driven care AND/OR actively participated on a previous BBI TA project,
  3. To have made improvements to program practices and staff skills as part of their commitment to family-driven care AND/OR their involvement in a previous BBI project,
  4. For top organization leadership to have already hired or have made a commitment to hiring at least one family partner position dedicated to residential program(s) within the next year,
  5. To have the organization's CEO sign off on a number of commitments (e.g., to the principle of family-driven care; intent to or already hired a family partner; having a specific # of leadership team members work on the project), and
  6. To have at least three residential program leadership team members commit to fully participating in this BBI Family Partner Project.
