Mental Health North East has been working with all North East police commissioners to research the numbers of young people (under 18) detained under Section 136 of the Mental health act (2007) and held in police cells rather than a hospital, secure unit, community venue etc

MHNE has found out that 16 young people were officially sectioned in this manner during 2011; we feel that holding a young person suffering mental distress in a cell can only make matters worse. Northumbria Police Force reported 1 detention during this period, Durham Police Force reported 5 and Cleveland Police Force reported 10.

MHNE has had reports of a higher number of such detentions through word of mouth. We are currently trying to gather further evidence to present to PCCs on this issue Any contributions would be very helpful and valuable in order to strengthen our research.
