2026 Retired members conference

motion submission

The retired members conference will debate motions on Thursday 12th March 2026.

If passed, motions will be submitted to the retired members committee and prioritised for submission to the JAC (joint agenda committee for the 2026 branch of practice conferences) and ARM (annual representative meeting). Motions passed by the ARM become BMA policy.

To submit motions for debate, on any subject, please upload them below by 9am Friday 6th February 2026.

If you have any queries about the motions or the voting process, please contact info.rmc@bma.org.uk.

Thank you in advance for your participation in this process.

Please find below two example motions to assist with your submission. If you require further assistance there is useful information on the BMA website motions writing page.

Example motion 1:

That this meeting accepts that the BMA did all it could to challenge the GMC decision to abolish exemption for the Annual Retention Fee for doctors over the age of 65 but now insists that every effort should be made to enable registered retired clinicians and non-clinical doctors to retain their prescribing rights in clearly defined exceptional circumstances.

Example motion 2:

That this meeting believes that the experience of retired members is not used enough and that they have an important role to play in the education of junior doctors by virtue of their experience and by means of the dissemination of this experience in several ways:

(I)            by emphasising the learned and caring nature of the medical profession;

(ii)           through the structure of the BMA locally, either within divisions or other means;

(iii)          by establishing a database of retired members utilising their experience and expertise as well as their geographical location.
