Welcome to Our Standards Writing Application & Nomination

     The New York State Department of Education will convene teams of Art Standards writers in Albany during the summer of 2016. Experts in the field of Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts will develop and update P-12 Learning Standards for the Arts for New York students as members of the Arts Standards Steering Committee. Recommendation and endorsement by a district superintendent, school building administrator, or pertinent professional association will be required. The selected members will create conceptual understandings, creative practices, discipline-specific content standards, performance expectations, related model assessments and lesson plans. Teams members will ensure that revised and/or newly developed performance expectations include consistent formatting, style, and language across the disciplines. 

   Arts Standards Steering Committee members will begin work this summer and it is anticipated writing and revisions will continue through the 2016-2017 school year.  Nominees should be prepared and available for this work throughout the 2016-17 school year. Reimbursements for costs of travel, meals, and lodging will be available according to current New York State policies and guidelines.  Applications due no later than Tuesday, March 22, 2016.

Candidate qualifications may include the following:

•  Content experts holding NYS certification(s) in their specific content area and/or grade-level, 

•  Knowledge of the National Core Arts Standards, the Conceptual Framework for Arts Learning, the Statewide Strategic Plan for the Arts and the current NYS Learning Standards for the Arts,

•  Teachers, administrators, and active arts education practitioners with at least five years of relevant experience,

•  Experience in advocating for arts learning standards, curriculum, assessments, materials and resources, professional development, and administrative/community support,

•  Teaching practice reflective of extensive knowledge of both historical and contemporary practice within the designated art form,

•  Knowledge and expertise related to the needs of students with disabilities, English language learners, and gifted students,

•   Excellent written communication skills and experience working collaboratively through online tools/current technology,

•  Representatives of the state’s demographics and diversity to the greatest extent that is possible, and 

•  Recommendation and support by district superintendents/(BOCES administrators), school district/school building administrators and/or supervisors, and pertinent professional associations to work with the Department.
