Senate President - Application

We are so pleased that you are thinking about running for a student leader position on the Madison College Student Senate. It is an awesome opportunity & responsibility to represent tens-of-thousands of students at Madison College. Elected student leaders contribute ideas & energy, making positive changes at Madison College each year. The growth experienced by individual student leaders is incredible, as well as being very marketable on college transfer applications & at internship & job interviews.

It is essential that a student understand the role of the Student Senate President BEFORE applying to run for the student leader position. Please READ CLOSELY the role description posted below, so that you understand the requirements of the role & the characteristics & skills necessary for success in the role.

It takes most applicants 20 - 30 minutes to complete this application.

Please know that portions of this application will be used in your "candidate profile" on the Student Senate website. Candidate profiles are linked to the online ballot, to help students become more informed, before voting for their representatives.

 

ROLE DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Senate President

1. Leads action to achieve goals established in the Senate 3-Year Plan

2. Main spokesperson for Student Senate & Madison College student body; makes presentations

3. Chair & Meeting Responsibilities: (1) Chairs Executive Council Meetings (1 / week, Fall & Spring); (2) Chairs General Assembly Meetings (1 / week, Fall & Spring; (3) Chairs Carry-Over Committee Meetings (1 / week or every-other week, Summer); (4) Works in collaboration with Vice President of Administration & Finance to plan meeting agendas; (5) Co-Chairs Student Activities Board Meetings (varies); (6) Serves on the Madison College – College Assembly for Shared Governance; (7) Participates in Madison College’s Vice President’s Student Advisory Council Meetings (1 / month); (8) Attends Madison College District Board Meetings (1 / month); (9) Chairs or serves on other committees, as appointed; (10) Meets weekly with Advisor to the Senate; (11) Prepares for & presents weekly reports: goals, accomplishments, decisions, plans for action, challenges & information

4. Schedules college representatives to provide informational briefings to the Senate: College President's Council, College Assembly or College Councils; Topic examples: environmental sustainability, campus security, advising, technology services, etc.

5. Appoints representatives to committees, with the approval of the Executive Council

6. Meets with college administrators, union officials, faculty members & other student leaders

7. Participates in focus groups, panels, receptions, ceremonies & college events

Term runs for a full-year (May to May). Serves approximately 5-10 hours / week in Summer, 12-15 hours / week in Fall & Spring.

Eligibility: • Current enrollment in 6 degree-credits at Madison College • Cumulative grade-point-average 2.5 or higher (unless new student)

Skills Necessary: • Excellent communication skills (listening, public speaking, writing, technology use) • Critical thinking & decision-making skills • Ability to plan for & facilitate meetings (use of parliamentary procedures & Roberts Rules of Order) • Excellent organizational skills

Characteristics for Success: • Natural leader • Dependable • Confident • Ability to see the “big picture,” anticipate & adapt to change • Student in the following academic programs: Business Management, Supervisory Management, etc.

Benefit Package for Senate President:

• Hourly pay (currently $12.50/hour, up to 20 hours/week)
• Senate-logo wear

Senate members who are appointed to serve on a shared governance team (the College Assembly or one of the seven College Councils) & attend at least 50% of the scheduled meetings each summer & each semester, will be compensated, as follows: $125 for Summer, $250 for Fall & $250 for Spring. Please note that priority appointment goes first to seated Senators, then to Senate Vice Presidents. (The Senate President holds a designated seat on the College Assembly.)
