Introduction

IEA EBC Annex 70 - Building Energy Epidemiology: Analysis of real building energy use at scale

What is Annex 70?

Annex 70 is an international collaboration of researchers, industry and government from across the globe who are working to develop methods for improving the empirical evidence on energy demand in the building stock.
Annex 70 is part of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy In Buildings and Community Programme, which carries out research and development activities toward near-zero energy and carbon emissions in the built environment.

Objective of the survey

This survey aims to gather information on the data needs, frequency of use and access to energy and building stock data among different organization types and their views on how data is used to support the low carbon transition of the built environment. This encompasses both respondents who require energy and buildings data for buildings managed by their own organizations and those accessing data to design buildings, policies and programs to improve the energy performance of buildings managed by others.

The questionnaire consists of five parts.
  • Part I: Respondent information;
  • Part II: Questions related to data characteristics and attributes used or held by your organization;
  • Part III: Questions related to energy and building stock data 'access & privacy';
  • Part IV: Questions on smart meter energy data and building performance data;
  • Part V: Additional thoughts or comments.

Estimated time for completion: 15 mins
Disclaimer and instructions

You are invited to participate in this research project because you have been identified as a user and/ or a producer of energy and building data. Your participation in this research study is voluntary. If you decide to participate in this survey, you may withdraw at any time.

The process involves filling an online survey pertaining to energy consumption, energy efficiency and other general building characteristics that will take approximately 15 minutes. As directed, please respond to the questions from either the perspective of your organization generally or your position specifically and your needs for energy and buildings data. Please consider your need for and use of this data over the last five years. All of your answers will be treated as private and confidential. All data is stored in a password protected electronic format. To help protect your confidentiality, the survey will not contain information that will personally identify you. The results of this study will be used for research purposes only. Aggregated results may be shared with IEA EBC Annex 70 participating country representatives.

The response data will be used to identify needs and gaps in energy and buildings stock data, including for use in developing an Energy and Buildings Stock Data Registry.  Summarized results will provide guidance for organizations working in this field.

If you have any questions about the research study, please contact the Annex 70 Principle Investigator Ian Hamilton at University College London, or Hannes Warmuth at the Austrian Society for Environment and Technology (Subtask A Co-Lead).
