At the direction of the Board of County Commissioners, Boulder County Parks & Open Space will explore a pilot program to test alternating use on select existing trails that currently allow multiple uses. The pilot would temporarily assign specific days for different uses instead of having all activities occur at the same time.
Parks & Open Space manages trails with different activity designations. Some trails allow multiple uses, including biking, hiking, and horseback riding (these are called multi-use trails). Other trails are limited to specific activities, such as hiking only. Some trails follow alternating use schedules that assign specific days to different activities. For example, at Betasso Preserve, biking is not allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays but is allowed on other days.
This proposed pilot will not involve building new trails or adding new infrastructure. It will not convert multi-use trails into single-use trails or single use trails into multi-use trails. It will only consider alternating use scheduling options on trails that are currently designated as multi-use for biking, hiking, and horseback riding.
Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey to help us better understand your support, opposition, or ideas for implementing an alternating use pilot on select trails or parks. Your feedback will help shape the pilot's design.
