Alex Spanko Memorial Award: Honoring Compassionate Leadership in Eldercare

The “Alex Spanko Memorial Award” will honor Alex’s enduring legacy and commitment to the movement to transform eldercare in the United States and beyond.

This award recognizes individuals who embody Alex’s steadfast commitment to creating care environments that honor the humanity of elders and celebrates those who are early in their careers and have made impactful contributions to the field of eldercare by demonstrating leadership, compassion, and resolute advocacy.

Alex’s Values and Vision
Alex advocated for moving beyond a binary storytelling narrative about our complex system of long-term care to capture the multifaceted nature of these challenges. He believed that improving eldercare would happen only through the convening of traditionally siloed entities to examine the issues from all sides and by considering all viewpoints.

Eligibility Criteria

Nominees should:

  • Be early in their career trajectories;
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to person-centered eldercare;
  • Lead (or have led) initiatives that promote dignity and respect for older adults;
  • Exhibit leadership qualities that inspire change and innovation in eldercare practices;
  • Embody the values and vision that Alex championed in his work.
