Introduction
In 2019, major milestones in the trajectory of Human Security at the United Nations were achieved. It marked 25 years since its introduction by the 1994 UNDP Human Development Report (HDR). It was also the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS), which has been instrumental in developing the concept of Human Security into an operational framework.
In 2020, COVID-19 swept across the globe, exacting health, economic and social costs in every country with vulnerable groups bearing the brunt of its impacts. The pandemic underlined the limitations of prevailing paradigms to effectively manage today’s complex crises, and resulted in a resurgence of interest in Human Security as a valuable framework for placing sustained improvements in all dimensions of people’s lives as the foundation for thriving, stable and inclusive societies.
This survey is being conducted by the World Academy of Art & Science in collaboration with the Inter Academy Partnership on behalf of the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security. The aim of the survey is to gather information from academies of science and research institutes who have engaged with Human Security to assess the value of the Human Security approach that encompasses peace and security, development and human rights. The findings of the survey will help refine an understanding of how Human Security can be best applied moving forward as a framework for action at the local, national and international level, and by agencies of the UN system. The relevance and urgency of this survey is magnified by the serious challenges confronting global society in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Survey respondents should be senior staff of science academies and research institutes associated with or interested in exploring the value of Human Security activities which directly impact on public policies, social initiatives and other activities to address basic human needs, social equity, sustainable livelihoods and other dimensions of Human Security. Separate surveys are being conducted for UN Member States, UN entities, as well as Parliamentarians and civil society organizations working on Human Security.
