The adolescent and young adult (AYA) years, ages 10-25, are periods of major physical, cognitive and psychosocial development. This growth brings opportunities and challenges for improving health and preventing disease and disability, both in the short- and long-term. Challenges include the emergence of risky behaviors and behavioral health issues, such as substance use and mental illness. In regards to behavioral health, depression is one of the most widely recognized mental health disorders among adolescents and young adults. Although depression screening in primary care is recommended for this age group, barriers exist such as a lack of skills in screening and managing moderate depression among providers and difficulties in linking to mental health treatment.

In response to this challenge, the Adolescent and Young Adult Health National Resource Center (AYAH-NRC) is pleased to announce the opportunity for state public health systems and local primary care practice networks to participate in the newest Adolescent and Young Adult Health Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network (AYAH CoIIN). This collaborative is specifically centered on improving depression screening and follow-up for young people, through systems-level behavioral health integration in primary care and improvement of screening rates for major depressive episodes (MDE) in clinical settings.

This multi-state AYAH CoIIN focused on behavioral health will operate through two arms: public health (led by state Maternal and Child Health programs) and primary care (led by clinical partners and practices). Both the public health and primary care arms will work simultaneously to address key drivers of unmet behavioral health needs for AYAs in their sectors.

Please take a few minutes to provide information on your program's interest for participating in this new CoIIN.
