Nominations open for the 2018 Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) Awards

In May 2018 the ARRB inaugural Gala Dinner and Awards Night recognised and celebrated research excellence across the transport sector. To continue the recognition of talent, we are now calling for nominations for the 2018 awards.

The awards will recognise achievements in the following categories:

Winning an ARRB Award reflects talent across the transport industry and leadership in shaping our transport future.

Question Title

* 1. Knowledge Transfer Commitment Award

Eligibility

This category rewards individuals or teams with a strong commitment to
communicating research outcomes to practitioners and fellow researchers over the preceding 24 months.

Selection Criteria

Nominators for this category should include:

■ Description of the communication program, listing events
■ Estimate of time expended on communication program
■ Quantification of audience numbers
■ Learning outcomes from the program
■ Narratives of impact of the program
■ Innovation in planning and executing the communication strategy

Question Title

* 2. Research Impact Award

Eligibility

This prize is awarded to an individual researcher or research team, whose research, development and implementation efforts have made a significant improvement to operational quality and/or cost in the last 24 months, and has therefore achieved considerable impact within the community and industry.

The impact for this award may include social, economic, political, technological, legal or environmental factors.

Nominators for this category should include at least one agency or department that has benefited from the research.

Selection Criteria

Nominations should address:

■ Provide details about the research itself (500 words max).
■ Description and quantification of the of the impact this research has had (300 words)
■ Description of further opportunities for benefit which the work still offers (200 words)

Nominations must include a written reference from at least one road agency, government department or local council, detailing the impact the research has made. Please email separately to training@arrb.com.au

Question Title

* 3. Implementing Agency Applied Research Award

Eligibility

This category looks at formal or informal applied research undertaken by staff of agencies or departments or local governments (not a third party), which has led to significant benefits to the organisation and/or its customers. Very often, these professionals ‘try different things’ as part of their efforts to work smarter, and this is an opportunity to showcase this ingenuity.

Supporting nominators for this category should include at least one state road agency that has implemented the research. Greater weighting to be applied to research implemented in multiple states and/or territories, or applied Australia-wide.

Selection Criteria

Nominations should provide:

■ Details about the research itself (500 words max).
■ Description and quantification of the of the impact this research has had (300 words)
■ Description of further opportunities for benefit which the work still offers (200 words)

Those nominations which demonstrate that the knowledge has been widely
shared in the orginisation and with other orginisations, will be at an advantage.

Question Title

* 4. New Research Talent Award

Eligibility

This award is for researchers under 35 years of age, who have made a significant discovery in the previous 24 months as part of their research activities related to road transportation. Nominees must be able to identify – when a research team is involved – their role in the discovery. Nominees can be drawn from any research institution or road agency.

Nominees must be under 35 years of age by 30 June 2018.

Selection Criteria

Nominations should include:

■ Description of the discovery, and the role the nominee played in it
■ Explanation of the significance of the discovery for road agencies, departments or their customers
■ An outline of their plans for implementing changes to practice based on the discovery.
■ Record of peer-reviewed publications related to the discovery

Question Title

* 5. Lifetime Research, Development & Implementation Award

Eligibility

This award is presented in recognition of an individual’s outstanding leadership and contribution to the road and transport sector for more than 25 years, based on an enduring track record of research, development and implementation activities.

This award recognises an individual who has:

■ An established history of rigourous first principles and applied research
■ A track record of creating implementable outcomes from their research
■ Undertaken extensive knowledge transfer, training and education activities related to their work
■ A track record of developing and mentoring younger professionals in their field
■ In doing all of the above;
— made a lasting and distinguished contribution to industry practice
— exhibited leadership and provided inspiration to others in the industry
— been a strong ambassador for Australasia in international circles

Selection of the nominee is made on the basis of the candidate’s significant, fundamental contributions to the road and transport sector through research, leadership and mentorship; the lasting impact of these contributions to the sector; and the demonstration of a lifetime commitment to this industry.

Selection Criteria

Nominations will be accepted from peers of nominees. The nominations should be 3,000 words or less and provide:

■ General description of the nominee’s research, its originality, benefit and
advancement of boundaries
■ Description/quantification of the impact and advantages of their research
■ Evidence of the sustained excellence and reputation of the researcher, including geographic scope
■ Publication record (please email to training@arrb.com.au)

Evidence and descriptions of commitment to:
■ collaboration
■ development of younger professionals
■ participation in formal education, training and knowledge transfer activities

Restrictions – past winners of this award are not eligible.
