Overview

GREETINGS!

Introduction
Thank you for your interest in the “STARTALK: Influences of ACTFL MOPI PD!" The workshop is part of a larger project that explores the short- and long-term impacts of workshop participation on instructors and administrators who work with critical languages in post-secondary education. The 11 critical languages include Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. The workshop is also open to a limited number of instructors of Spanish. The study is being conducted by Dr. Margaret Malone (director of the AELRC), Margaret Borowczyk (Lead Instructor of the course) and  Rima Elabdali  (Course Instructor) at Georgetown University.

Overview
Before registering you for the workshop, we want to provide a full overview of the workshop and the expectations for your participation. As you know, the “STARTALK: Influences of ACTFL MOPI PD” workshop has two major components: an online component (done on your own time and at your own pace between May 22 and June 12) and a face-to-face workshop, which will be held at Georgetown University June 13-15. After completing the online and face-to-face components, we will follow up with you by administering three survey questionnaires and conducting several over-the-phone or virtual (e.g., Zoom, Google Hangouts) interviews at two points: October/November 2019 and January 2020. Follow-up questionnaires and interviews will provide insight into how experience with the ACTFL Guidelines has had an impact on instructors and administrators over time.

Study Plan
Registration entails completion of the online and face-to-face components. As you complete the online component (6-10 hours), you will interact with information, watch and reflect on videos of interviews and then respond to questions to determine the extent to which you internalized information about the ACTFL Guidelines and sample interviews. Each quiz component will take a few minutes to finish.

The face-to-face workshop will take place from June 13-15, 2019 at Georgetown University. After the face-to-face workshop, we will follow up with an online questionnaire at two times: in Fall 2019 and January 2020. These questionnaires will take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. Then, we will conduct a one-hour interview sessions (in Fall 2019).

Participation
Participation in the online and face-to-face components of the “STARTALK: Influences of ACTFL MOPI PD” workshop is entirely contingent upon your desire to take part in the workshop and submission of this pre-workshop registration questionnaire. Note that the workshop will not include costs for limited OPI certification but will cover the face-to-face workshop costs. OPI certification is not included in this workshop, though you can learn more about the certification process through this information packet.

If you wish to withdraw your registration, please e-mail Margaret  Borowczyk at mb2134@georgetown.edu.
