Overview:

Paper Tigers, One High School’s Unlikely Success Story, a new film directed by James Redford, is an
intimate look into the lives of selected students at Lincoln High School, an alternative high school that specializes in educating traumatized youth. The film examines the inspiring promise of Trauma
Informed Communities, a movement that is showing great promise in healing youth struggling with the dark legacy of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). ACE includes verbal, physical or sexual abuse, as well as family dysfunction . The Centers for Disease Control, in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente’s Health Appraisal Clinic in San Diego, conducted the ACE Study, one of the largest investigations ever to assess associations between childhood maltreatment and later-life health and well-being.

The workshop will engage participants in:

· Viewing Paper Tigers in four segments
· Reviewing the findings of the ACE Study as they relate to the healthy development of youth
· Small group guided discussions about the lifelong impact of exposure to multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences and what actions schools can take to minimize this impact
· Completing an ACE survey
· Creating an action plan for developing a Trauma Informed Community in your school
