Applicant Information

Thank you for your interest in the Alternative Break Trip program at UNLV!  We are excited to involve academic and administrative faculty as staff and site leaders-- these individuals are vital to support learning as students get off campus to serve.

Trips are hosted in Student Engagement & Diversity (SED) and work with motivated students and to engage with them outside of the classroom. Our trips provide service and learning opportunities (80% of trip time), along with some local cultural/recreational experiences (only ~20% of the time) for student participants.

Undergraduate students are the site leaders. Academic and administrative faculty are present to complement them as site leaders and facilitators, help manage any risk and crisis situations, and to bring their own experience, passion, and knowledge to the trip.

Program principles include living simply, being in community, learning and serving with, seeking justice, and sharing the story. Participants (including staff) may sleep on air mattresses on floors, be asked to minimize or eliminate technology use for the experience, and spend more time than usual with the community on the trip (i.e. more than a typical 8-hour day).

Student Engagement & Diversity covers all administrative and academic faculty travel costs while on the trips. We do ask that they participate in 3 pre-trip meetings with their group (March 8, 15, and 22 from 5-6:30), attend trainings w/ the Asst. Dir for Service-Learning and Alternative Breaks to get program information (crisis protocol, resources, finances, etc.), attend at least 1 meeting with the student site leader (set by the student site leader) and the final celebration/sharing event April 10. *We are happy to send you this information in a handout-- email altbreaks@unlv.edu to request a handout with this information!*

Please complete this survey and we will be in touch about getting involved with the Alternative Break Trip program. We are glad you're interested in this transformative immersion program!
