Approximately every two years the Colorado EMS Scope of Practice rules at 6 CCR 1015-3, Chapter 2 of the "Practice Rules" are scheduled to be updated. The rules address qualifications and duties of EMS medical directors as well as EMS scope of practice and have replaced Colorado Board of Medicine Rule 500. A full copy of the rules can be found here: http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/regulations/ems/101503chapter2practiceandmedicaldirectoroversight.pdf.
The update process involves ongoing stakeholder input and the Emergency Medical Practice Advisory Council (EMPAC). Rule updates are ultimately adopted by the Chief Medical Officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The purpose of these rules is to define the standard scope of practice for EMS providers across the state. It should further be noted that local medical directors may allow or restrict any item within the scope. Furthermore, waivers to perform procedures or administer medications beyond the scope of practice may also be applied for through the EMPAC.
The following survey is used by the EMPAC and CDPHE staff to gather stakeholder input on an ongoing basis. We welcome your comments and ask you please limit your comments to one topic per survey submissions so we can best track and correlate your suggestions.
