According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006-07 Edition, “Medical assistant is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the 2004-14 period.” The handbook notes prospects for employment of medical assistants, “particularly those with certification,” as being very promising. To obtain nationally recognized certification, students must complete a program provided by an accredited institution and pass the national exam.
To address this growing need for qualified professionals Arizona Western College is considering the development of a comprehensive training program that would include both the front and back office components required of a certified medical assistant. It is estimated the program would require about 18 months for completion with a minimum of 720 hours of training, including 160 hours of clinical externship. This quality program would require a serious investment on the part of the college and the students. Therefore it is essential to determine the level of support and potential for partnerships within the medical community.
