Consent to Participate in Research

Introductory section: You are invited to take part in a research study conducted by Caitlin Sadowski at UCSC. Before you decide whether or not to participate in the study, you should read this form and ask questions if there is anything that you do not understand.

Description of the project: The purpose of this research study is to evaluate a new course curricula and materials for teaching parallel and concurrent programming. We are doing this study because parallel and concurrent programming is a type of programming with increasing future importance and does not yet have a standard set of materials. By telling us about parallel and concurrent programming before and after the course, we can learn more about how to improve this course.

What you will do in the study: If you decide to participate in this study, you will fill out short web-based surveys before and after completing the course.

Time required: It should take less than 10 minutes to complete each questionnaire.

Risks & Benefits: There are no anticipated risks in this study. Although there are no direct benefits to you as a participant, the researcher may learn more about how to teach parallel and concurrent programming to refine course materials for future students.

Confidentiality: The information that you give in the study will be handled confidentially. All survey results are anonymous. Your name will not be used in any report.

Decision to quit at any time: The decision to take part in this study is completely voluntary. You do not have to participate. Even if you decide at first to take part, you are free to change your mind at any time and quit the study. Whatever you decide will in no way penalize you or result in loss of benefits or services. The decision to participate or not participate in this study will not affect your class grade.
