SLA has begun a year long conversation on Information Ethics in order to help craft official guidelines for the association. I need your comments and opinions to help SLA create a code that will meet the needs of all members. The survey will also introduce you to the proposed components of an Ethics code for SLA members.
SLA members are currently referred to the ethics codes of the AALL, ALA, AIIP, ASSIS&T, ARMA, CLA, SCIP and other library associations. After analyzing the codes of ten professional associations, the SLA Ethics workgroup recommended the following eight components as being relevant to SLA:
Professional development Highest levels of service Responsibility for quality of systems, services, materials Integrity and accurate representation of expertise Legal considerations and intellectual property concerns Treatment of/relationship with employer, colleagues, and users Conflicts of interest Confidentiality and privacy
The following survey includes various definitions (found in other association codes) of these eight components. You will be asked to choose the definitions that most closely represent your opinions.
