Individual Responses to Stressful Life Experiences
The purpose of this project, Individual Responses to Stressful Life Experiences, is to obtain information about how individuals respond to stressful experiences in their lives. During this research study, you will be asked to describe a stressful experience that has occurred in your life within the past three years, and then to assess the impact that the event has had on you. This study will further our understanding of effects of stress on individuals. The primary researcher for this study is David Solomon, an undergraduate student in the Psychology Program, who is being supervised by Dr. Arnie Cann, professor in the UNC Charlotte Psychology Department. If needed, you may contact David Solomon via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
You may participate in this study if you are at least 18 years of age. You may not participate in this study if you are under the age of 18.
In this study, you will be asked to complete a variety of online measures. These measures include demographic information, descriptions of a stressful life experience, and a series of questions about your reactions to, and the effect of, the stressful life experience. All responses will be anonymous. You should be aware, however, that the experiment is not being run from a "secure" https server of the kind typically used to handle credit card transactions, so there is a very small possibility that responses could be viewed by unauthorized third parties (e.g., computer hackers).
There will be approximately 200 participants in this study. Participation in this study will require only one visit to the online survey site, lasting approximately 20 minutes. The project may involve risks that are not currently known. We do not expect that participation in this project will cause any distress, but some psychological discomfort is possible due to the sensitive nature of the research topic. You are a volunteer. The decision to participate in this study is completely up to you. If you decide to be in the study, you may stop at any time. You will not be treated any differently if you decide not to participate in the study or if you stop once you have started.
If you have any questions after the research is completed, or if you want information about the results, contact the primary researcher, Dr. Arnie Cann in the Psychology Department email@example.com. If you have further questions or concerns about your rights as a participant in this study, contact the Compliance Office at UNC Charlotte (704) 687-3309.
