Introduction

Violence is an epidemic throughout all workplaces, but is impacting the healthcare sector in particular.

According to a study conducted in 2004, 72% of nurses do not feel safe from assault at work (International Council of Nurses). The same study found that female workers are most likely to suffer from workplace violence.

We know the number of workplace violence incidents – the majority of which go unreported – are growing.  However, there is a lack of current data to communicate the shocking number of incidents experienced in the workplace by all workers in the healthcare sector.

We have developed a survey to collect your personal experiences with workplace violence so that we can better understand how widespread this epidemic truly is.

The survey is divided into four main sections:

1.            Your personal experience;
2.            Whether or not you reported an incident and why/why not;
3.            How your workplace is set up to deal with these incidents;
4.            Whether or not you would be willing to share your experience and if so, your contact information.

We understand the sensitivity of this topic so all of your answers are completely anonymous, unless you are willing to share your identity and story.

Whether or not you share your story anonymously or openly, any single response builds towards our collective goal of Breaking the Silence on Workplace Violence.

Thank you for participating in SEIU Healthcare’s survey on workplace violence.
